For his exhibit Search/Light (Silverlens, Manila, 2017), Frank Callaghan presented 17 photographs of sky and sea, taken over five successive nights. In the eighth and fourteenth photographs, the horizon is visible, illuminated by an unseen searchlight (“an unknowing collaborator,” says conceptual artist and curator Gary-Ross Pastrana).
In Search/Light 8, the sea makes itself known, the horizon glows green and the surf undulates under the blue beam of light. In Search/Light 14, the beam creates a bigger swath of purple light in the night sky, revealing more of the sea to the gaze of the observer.
