Fernando Zóbel’s Despliegue en Gerona was among the artworks featured in the exhibition, Zóbel Contrapuntos, one of the 22 Collateral Events of the Venice Biennale in 2017.
A mix of oil and sand, the painting was completed around the time of Zóbel’s Saeta period from 1957 to 1959. Though not exclusively a Saeta, the painting “bears some of the same gestural qualities and composition ideas” from that period.
